What are the different levels of chimney and fireplace inspections

Understanding Your Options

LEVEL 1

Visual Inspection

Visual-only check of accessible areas — no camera, no interior flue scan.  Suitable for standard cleaning per the Chimney Safety Institute of America.

Annual Maintenance

LEVEL 2

Full Camera Inspection

Full interior video camera scan plus thorough examination of all accessible areas. Required by NFPA when buying/selling a home, after any chimney incident, or when changing your heating system.

In certain circumstances, we will recommend this level and advise whether it is necessary.

LEVEL 3

Damage Investigation

Involves opening walls, removing components, or partial demolition to assess hidden damage. Only warranted when a Level 2 uncovers evidence of severe structural failure.

Damage Investigation Only

Why Denver Homeowners Need To Inspect Their Chimney Annually

At 5,280 feet, combustion runs differently than at sea level. Colorado’s resinous pine and juniper, popular firewood choices, produce creosote faster than eastern hardwoods. Add the Front Range’s freeze-thaw cycles, which work mortar joints and chimney crowns hard every winter, and you have conditions that make skipping an annual inspection a genuine risk. Denver chimneys age faster than the national average.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Chimney Sweep Pricing

Straight answers to the questions we hear most from Denver metro homeowners.

A Level 1 inspection starts at $165 for open wood-burning and gas fireplaces, and $215 for sealed behind-glass gas fireplaces. If cleaning is required, a $100 fee applies, bringing totals to $265 or $315 respectively. These prices cover 20+ core Denver metro communities.

A Level 2 Inspection is required when the property is sold, after a chimney fire or weather event, or when altering the venting system (e.g., adding a new stove) to your home.

Sealed gas fireplaces with fixed glass fronts require additional steps to safely access and properly service the burner assembly, thermopile and thermocouple, gas valve, ignition system, and venting. These components require measurement and testing equipment beyond what an open fireplace inspection needs, and the work takes longer. The $50 difference directly reflects that additional labor and technical scope.

Yes. NFPA 211 recommends annual inspection for all fireplaces and venting systems, including gas. At 5,280+ feet, combustion and venting behave differently than at sea level. Incomplete combustion at altitude can allow carbon monoxide to accumulate. Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycles also continuously stress venting components and flue connections. Annual inspection is not optional maintenance for Denver gas fireplace owners.

Our chimney cleaning removes soot, creosote, and debris from the firebox, smoke shelf, smoke chamber, and the full length of the flue. We use HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment and protect your home with drop cloths before anything starts. For wood-burning fireplaces, we assess creosote by stage (Stage 1, 2, or 3) and inform you if heavy Stage 3 deposits require chemical treatment.

Only when our inspection determines cleaning is necessary. Some fireplaces, particularly those used infrequently, recently serviced, or primarily burning gas, may pass inspection without requiring a full cleaning. If cleaning is needed, we will tell you before proceeding. You decide.

Our technicians are certified through the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). We also have NFI Master Hearth Professionals on staff — the National Fireplace Institute’s highest technical designation covering gas, wood, and pellet systems. You can verify CSIA certification at csia.org.
